Lễ hội Iriya Asagao được tổ chức vào ngày 6, 7, 8 tháng 7 hằng năm từ cuối thời Edo, khi asagao (hoa bìm bìm hoa tía) trở nên phổ biến trong giới samurai cấp thấp. Hằng năm, hơn 400,000 người tụ tập lại để xem hơn 100 gian hàng bán hoa bìm bìm hoa tía.

Did you ever guess how many different types of morning glories there are? Come to the Iriya Asagao Festival and see for yourself. At the center of this photograph is a bellflower-morning glory: a morning glory that blooms like a Chinese bellflower.
Many people come to see the Kappabashi Tanabata Matsuri (July 5 - 10) in the same neighborhood. It's a good idea to walk the extra few blocks and take a look, but beware of the heat, especially if you're wearing a yukata like the woman in the photo!
It's hard to say whether there are more people or flowers on the crowded Kototoi Street, where all the stalls are.
Morning glory stalls compete against each other to see who can sell the most flowers. What's different from Edo period? Perhaps the fact that you can choose to have your pot of morning glory sent to your house or hotel by express delivery.
The center of the festivities is Shingenji Temple, commonly known as Iriya Kishimojin, after its worship of Kishimo (Hariti), symbol of protection of children.
